D2W Finance Group

Safe-to-spend calculator: what is left before payday?

Your bank balance can look healthy while much of it already has a purpose. Estimate what remains after upcoming bills, everyday essentials, planned saving and a buffer—using the cash you have now.

Use the calculator without signing up or linking a bank. It is a simple check you can use today, separate from D2W’s planned AI app.

What does your cash still need to cover?

No account needed

Use one period: now until your next income

Enter each amount once, in pounds. Use 0 where nothing needs to be reserved.

A label for this plan. The date does not add future income or calculate payment timing.

Your own cash in spending accounts. Exclude credit limits, unused overdrafts and money already in separate savings pots.

Payments still due before your next income, including card minimums. Include pending payments only if your available balance has not already deducted them.

Food, travel and other living costs for the same period. Do not repeat anything included in your bills.

Money you still plan to set aside before payday. Exclude savings already left out of the first amount.

The total amount of this cash you want to protect for surprises. Enter it once, separately from the costs above.

This check uses today’s cash. Expected salary, benefits or other future income are not added.

How do you calculate
safe-to-spend money?

For this tool, “safe to spend” means cash that has not been allocated to the costs and reserves you enter. It does not mean risk-free spending or a recommendation to spend the full amount.

The calculation

Current cash − bills and required debt payments − everyday essentials − planned saving − protected buffer.

All costs cover the same period: from now until your next expected income. That future income is not added to your available cash.

A balance of £2,495
does not mean £2,495 to spend.

Alex has £2,495 in spending accounts. Separate savings pots are already excluded. The plan reserves £1,200 for bills and debt payments, £450 for essentials, £200 for saving and £150 as a buffer.

The amounts reserved total £2,000.00. That leaves £495.00 unallocated.

Should I include my overdraft or credit limit?

No. This tool starts with your own available cash. An unused overdraft or credit-card limit is borrowing capacity, not cash you own. It does not model borrowing costs or an account that is already overdrawn.

What about pots and pending payments?

Exclude money already set aside in separate pots from starting cash. Do not deduct it again as planned saving or a buffer. Similarly, a pending payment should be counted once: either in an adjusted available balance or in upcoming costs.

What if I am paid at different times?

Choose a period you can sensibly plan for and include the costs due during it. If the next payment is uncertain or delayed, the estimate can become outdated. This calculator does not forecast income or check the order of transactions.

What does a shortfall mean?

A negative result means the cash entered is less than the costs and reserves in this plan. It is a prompt to review the figures, not permission to skip essential bills. If essential costs or debt payments are becoming unaffordable, free debt support can help you consider your situation.
